I use a phonics system by Abeka. We teach the 5 short vowel sounds first, then teach t, l, b, n, etc. Once the kids know the short vowel sounds and a few frequently used consonants, they are forming and reading consonant-vowel blends (ta, te, ti, to, and tu) and by adding a consonant to the end of a blend they are reading 3-letter words (tab, tub, bat, bin, etc.). We then begin introducing sight words (the, a, to). By December we are forming reading groups and using our first readers. After teaching the short vowels and all the consonants we teach the long vowel sounds and the 1- and 2-vowel rules. I've been using this program for 5 years and I still get excited when their little minds start making those first connections in reading.
