Hi I usually start the year with a whole group book that is easy or should be easy for everyone. i ususally do something that I can make a class big book from...the one that comes to mind right now it the book Down By| The Bay....there's also a tape/cd that goes along with it. It's fun, it rhymes, the song is catchy and the kids love it. We each make our own big book page for the class book. I usually end up putting it up in the hall for openhouse before I turn it into a book. This gives me a chance to observe all my kids. Do some assessment if needed and decide on reading groups. When I do start | | groups I don't start them all at once. I begin with the kids I deem the most needy and get them going while I have the other kids do journals, DOL, DOG (daily oral geography) etc. Every couple of days I begin another reading group until all the kids are grouped. this allows me to work with one group while teaching the rest of the class behavior and proceedure during reading groups. Then in the future I will add reading silently from their reading story to the class assignment...another job...but also they can be more prepared for the day's lesson. I'll give them a sentence goal to look for while reading. Example:Kids reading Harry Potter, I want you to try to find out why Harry is doing such and such and be prepared to answer that during group.I hope that helps you some.
