I just read your messange and I know you have probably started back to school. Are things a bit calmer now? You can teach guided reading to 40 children but they are not going to get a lot of your individual time. Reading
and Lang. Arts are a really HUGE part of the curriculum. Will you have a specific block for teaching or will different kids see you all day? I recommend that you have a good number of centers for them to be assigned to. That way you can keep track of who has finished what center. Keeping them working as independently as possible is a good goal for the beginning. Be sure they get to that
point before you attempt to run a reading group or you'll go crazy! Once they understand how the centers work and do a good job at it, you can meet with about 4 kids at a time for Guided Reading. A teacher I observed put a hat on whenever he did GR and the kids knew this meant not to disturb him unless it was a last resort. I'm starting the actual Guided Reading program this fall. Like you, I hope it all comes together.
