Centers/small groups vs Whole group
By Stephanie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hello Jen,
Last year was my first year in K and I used both whole group, small group, and centers. During the seatwork portion of my day, I would pull small groups and focus on reading or math. As the children finished
their seatwork, they would look at the Work Jobs Board and look at what centers they were to attened that day. I had 5 groups with 3 or 4 children in each group. Under their names were the names of the centers along with pictures. These signs were also attatched to the center themselves. The centers were always something they could do independently. This idea came from the book Guided
Reading by Fountas and Pinnell and from many other teachers at a ListServ I belong to. I did not have anything the children had to turn in because the activities were to reinforce concepts.

I do whole group instruction teach phonics & math, and for shared reading, morning message. After many, many ways of structing my classroom this worked well for me and my children. Hope I helped. Email me if you have any other questions.
