One of my favorite Big Books is Mrs Wishy Washy and I love to have my first graders write and illustrate their own versions (actually we brainstorm ideas for pages, I write them on the paper and they illustrate..then we laminate the pages and put into a book format. Let the children take turns checking it out to read to their parents. I also do a little action song with them (taught by Jan Parrish of Wright Group)... Down on the farm where the animals play, (point with your finger) There's a wishy, washy washer woman, washes all day She goes uh,ah, uh, ah, (mimic scrubbing up | | and down on a scrubbaord) That's how the washer woman washes all day. (finger in the air as you exclaim)(Then with hands in the air, like hokey pokey) Waddly-atcha, waddley-atcha (Put hands on hips, wiggle hips) A wiggle, wiggle ,wiggle.(Repeat) Waddley-atcha, waddley-atcha (repeat above moves) That's how the Washer Woman Washes all day! (Point finger again as though explaining) My students don't usually let it stop with one sing through! You can find some awesome ideas for using Chicka Chicka in a book called PEAK WITH BOOKS, by Jan Parrish and her mother, Marge Nelson. One that I have adapted and have used very often over the years is a rewrite of Chicka..I drew letters of the alphabet to resemble fish and give each child a page to color. We glue a Xeroxed picture of the child onto the page (small circle/oval about size of quarter or 1/2 dfollar), rewrote Chick from a prompt given in PEAK...A chased B and B chased C, D cahsed E, ..away they swam to the bottom of the sea. E chased F, and F chased g,..away they swam (Put the phrase Away they swam..after each letter that rhymes with sea.) I finished up with 'Z..away they swam to the bottom of the..uhoh! Drew a big whale smiling..the next picture was the same whale saying "Burp!" Kids and parents love that one..makes a cute "wallbook, or accordian book" and also can be checked out and taken home to share with parents. Can make cute pictures with alphabet ceral also. Let children glue it onto a page with cut out tree trunks and palm leaves..maybe use chalk or crayon to put the sand below the tree.
