On the first day I have a "surprise sack" for each student. When they come in they put their things away and then find their name on a sack and can busy themselves with the contents (which can be anything you choose). I usually put a couple of coloring sheets, a "school is cool" bookmark, a special Kindergartener pencil, sweet-tarts, smarties, a fun eraser, and maybe a small toy. It works like a charm and frees me to speak with parents. (Plus makes the kids feel super special right off the bat)
