kindergarten reading
By Bev

Clip to ScrapBook
We have very academic K classes, and our children read and write by the end of the year. We read "daily news" every morning, and we have a word wall of 24 basic words. The children are encouraged to write the "kindergarten way", using beginning sounds as they learn them and advancing to ending and medial sounds, along with using sight words. We also do letter of the week, but our routine includes the names and sounds of each letter every day so they often know it before we get to it. My average children are now reading Level C and above Balanced Literacy books, and writing 2-4 sentence stories, hopefully with capitals and punctuation. We also do extensive work with word families. This is all in a half-day session! Good luck. Next year will be easier.
