K journals
By Gail

Clip to ScrapBook
I haven't really done journals much per se. We do interactive writing, theme writing projects and use story starters. Some people put these stories into a sets and call them journals. Whatever. Mail Box has story starters.
I've been using them for months and find them to be just great. The one for April is actually called ___________'s Baby Animal Journal(s) As a whole class, I read the story starters, contribute an exciting idea to get them started and ask for suggestions. The ideas are quite colorful and encourage the kids to think beyond their limited writing abilities. I then send them back to their
seats with the story starter sheet. They glue it to the front of a construction paper folder, color the starter they want to use and then write and illustrate it. We save them for several days and the children write one or more stories each day during that time. Usually after a week or ten days, the folder goes home with all the stories. I save one for the portfolio every couple of months.
