1. To teach children that they should never touch matches paint the tips of popsicle sticks red and hide them around the room. Then have the
M-A-T-C-H M-A-T-C-H M-A-T-C-H I'll keep my family safe-o! 2. Share the book Fire Engine Shapes by Bruce McMillian with your students, drawing their attention to all the different shapes you can find on a fire engine. Then give them a large piece of paper (I use 12x18) and different shapes. Let them create their own fire engine using the shapes. I display these on a bulletin board. This is always a class favorite! 3. Bring in telephones and have the children practice calling 911. I use two phones so they call on one and myself or volunteer 'answers'. When the adult answers they ask questions such as "What is the emergency?" "What is your name?" "What is your address?" "What is your telephone number?" I also reinforce that they never hang up until the adult tells them too. These are just a few...of course no unit on fire safety is complete without a visit to your local fire station. Hope these help. Feel free to email with questions or suggestions.
