emotional outburst
By Cheryl Pruett

Clip to ScrapBook
Hey, I'm not a teacher but I am the mother of a 11 year old who has been in the gifted program at school since kindergarten so I am very familair with what you are talking about. My son did ok in Kindergarten without outburst
he waited till 1st grade (ha) anyway last year when he was in 5th grade his gifted education teacher had him assigned to "tutor" a kindergartener who was acting out in class. He was basically used as a reward system for the other child because if he cooperated with the teacher did his work etc then Lawson would be allowed to work with him in the afternoon however if he did not then
he could not be allowed to work with Lawson. It was great for both children and they built a special bond. My son was excussed from class if his work when his work was completed and would do a lesson plan for the month for the other child along with the approval of his teacher. This kindergartener had little social skills yet had taught himself to read at 18 months old without knowing the alphabet so you can imagine what the teacher was dealing with. At first we were a little apprehensive about letting our son out of his classes since he has always had a problem getting his class work done however he wanted to work with this child so much and he felt so helpful and proud of the other little boy that it really benefited both children. As a matter of fact I just meet his grandmother the other day and she stated that having Lawson as a tutor was so beneficial that she wished that he was still at that school because it really helped his behavior. This is just an idea but it worked for us. The key seemed to be the teachers paired the children up according to like personalities.
