Marigolds are very easy to grow. They pop up quickly, are tough little plants and will survive in the kids yards as well for a summer of enjoyment. Zinnias are good too. That's what I would recommend for cool areas like the Northeast. I'm sure the folks in the south can recommend others for that climate if you need to transpant them when they go home.
