Play is a child's work!!! Be careful about putting too much emphasis on "Academics". You may be missing the real picture. Look for a good book on "developmentally appropriate practice". I think you will be surprised to find how much of a preschoolers day should revolve around play and how much they benefit from play. What you are seeing as wasted play time is actually teaching the very skills you call academics!
